New art exhibition opens at Chappel Galleries in Colchester

Wide Horizon, featuring paintings by east Suffolk artist Julie Giles, opens at Chappel Galleries on Saturday, May 23, as part of the galleries’ 40th anniversary celebrations.

The exhibition is a tribute to Julie’s long-standing relationship with the landscape.

Both her recent work and earlier pieces will be on display, some of which have never been seen before.

Julie said: “I came to be a painter through a love of landscape and the natural world, studying painting at Camberwell in the 1960s.

“In 1967 I came to settle in east Suffolk from living near the Pennine hills and what really struck me were the wide horizons and huge skies not just of the weathery coast and estuary, but also the countryside.”

Her paintings capture scenes from the River Alde estuary and coastal marshes, alongside floral studies and impressions gathered from travels across Europe.

Julie, who studied botany before going to art school, said: “My hope is that I can communicate some of the joy I feel in painting all these beautiful places to the viewer.”

The exhibition continues until Sunday, June 21, and can be viewed Wednesday to Sunday from 10am to 5pm.
