Veganuary: Essex’s top-rated vegan restaurants, according to Tripadvisor and Google reviews

Veganuary is becoming more and more popular each year.

Thousands across the country decide to go vegan for the whole month of January.

Anyone with any dietary requirements will know that it can be difficult to stick to when you go out for food.

Fortunately here in Essex we have some amazing vegan restaurants to help you out.

We have looked at reviews left on Google as well as Tripadvisor to find which ones across the county are the best.

The Oaktree – Leigh-on-Sea

The Oaktree in Leigh-on-Sea is 100% vegan.

Opening in 2013, this restaurant is just a few minutes away from the busy Southend-on-Sea so is great for a meat-free meal on a beach day.

There is a large menu which includes starters, mains and desserts.

Dishes include pie and mash, burgers, curry and lasagne.

Even all of the drinks are vegan – including a cocktail list.

The Oaktree is rated 4.6/5 on google and 4.5/5 on TripAdvisor.

The Olive Branch – Wivenhoe

The Olive Branch in Wivenhoe serves vegan, Syrian food.

This plant-based kitchen is a family business which won a Tripadvisor Travellers Choice Award in 2020.

On the menu you can find dishes such as veggie stew, Okra, pastries, paninis, wraps and more.

You can also order their popular platters.

There’s also a selection of hot and cold drinks, and you can bring your own alcohol for just £3 corkage.

Everything is vegetarian and most is vegan with just a couple of exceptions clearly marked.

On Google, The Olive Branch is rated 4.7/5 and 4.5/5 on Tripadvisor

Stoked Vegan BBQ – Westcliff-on-Sea

Stoked claims to be the first and only authentic vegan BBQ joint.

Conceived during the 2020 lockdown, Stoked is all about bringing traditional BBQ cooking methods to vegan food.

Every item on the menu is made in house from scratch.

The menu isn’t huge, but is regularly updated.

On it, you can find dishes like the BBQ plate, Chick’n sliders and Southwest Celeriac.

There’s also a great drinks menu with lots of vegan beers.

On Google, Stoked is rated 4.8/5 and on Tripadvisor 4.5/5.

Vegan Vampire – Billericay

Vegan Vampire in Billericay may not have a sit in restaurant but that doesn’t stop them being one of Essex’s favourite vegan places to eat.

These street food specialists can be found on the grounds of The Billericay Theatre.

There is outside seating or you can take your food away (they offer local delivery on Thursday, Friday and Saturday too).

The menu includes Moving Mountains patty burgers including the Stacked Vampire Burger as well as wraps, Jackfruit wings, hot dogs and more.

Vegan Vampire can also be hired for events.

On Google they are rated 5 stars

Hank’s – Colchester

Hank’s can be found in the centre of Colchester town.

Opened in August 2021, this new addition is already proving popular.

You can eat in or take away with a huge menu.

On it you can find breakfasts, lunches and dinner items.

There’s burgers, kebabs, sandwiches, sub rolls, hot dogs and so much more.

On Google, Hank’s is rated 4.9/5.
