University of Essex has postponed graduations until 2022, as it “cannot proceed with confidence” with ceremonies this year.
The university had aimed to run ceremonies in July, September or autumn after graduations were cancelled last year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
However, now University of Essex says graduation ceremonies won’t take place until January 2022 at the earliest.
Other ceremonies are planned to be held in Spring and Summer 2022.
After the final step of lifting lockdown restrictions on June 21 was delayed and with Covid cases rising nationally, University of Essex said: “We have considered all possible options for COVID-safe precautions to be able to run ceremonies in 2021.
“Our highest priority is to keep our community safe during the difficult circumstances of the pandemic.
“We have concluded that, at this stage, we cannot proceed with confidence to offer ceremonies in September 2021 or later in the Autumn.
“We are very disappointed not to be able to run ceremonies earlier but are really looking forward to welcoming our graduates and their friends, families and supporters in 2022.”
When will students be able to attend graduations?
Graduation ceremonies will take place for University of Essex across 2022.
The ceremonies in January 2022 should be the university’s first Winter Graduation.
University of Essex wanted to introduce these in 2020-21, but were unable to do so because of the pandemic.
Students who are granted a degree between July 23, 2021 and December 31, 2021, will be eligible to attend the ceremonies which will take place across January 12 and 13, 2022.
Other ceremonies are planned for Spring and Summer 2022.
The Spring graduations will be for students who had their ceremonies postponed due to Covid.
This includes the 2020 and 2021 cohort of students, who were granted their degree between July 23, 2019 and July 22, 2021.
The ceremonies will take place between March 28 and April 1, 2022.
This means University of Essex should be back to a “normal” schedule by next summer, when ceremonies will be run between July 18 and July 22.
The university added that departments and schools will be holding online celebrations for summer graduates to “mark and celebrate their success.”
